Gray and Istnick Successfully Defend 50KM Road Titles

Joe Gray, 29, of Renton, WA came closer to the course record held by Michael Wardian, a multiple winner at Caumsett Park 50KM USA Road Championships, coming up just 15 seconds short and missing the $1,000 bonus.  Gray, a professional runner, sponsored by Scott Sports and Mio Global, among others, finished in 2:55:19 to repeat as champion. He said, “The competition was good, but wish they’d have been a little closer, to push me to break the record.” The Oklahoma State graduate, with a degree in sociology and MS in criminology, also said, “I will be back next year, God willing.” Gray will make his marathon debut at this year’s Boston Marathon among the elite field.
Shanna Ailes Istnick, 34, of Kent, OH, led the women’s field from start to finish in a time of 3:33:04, good enough for sixth overall to win here second consecutive national 50KM title. This was the 12th running of the Caumsett Park 50KM and 8th consecutive time it has hosted the national championships. The race was presented by Merrell of Huntington Village.
Boyd Carrington, 40, of Amityville, NY and Tina-Marie Poulin, 40, of New York, NY were the top Masters finishers in 3:28:44 and 3:56:57, respectively. The 5KM course, repeated 10 times, is an undulating circuit on the roads serving the former estate of department store mogul, Marshall Field, adjacent to Long Island Sound. The race is organized by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) and directed by Carl Grossbard and Nick Pallazzo.  Grossbard was pleased with the turnout for this year’s event, as it continues to grow. A total of nearly 450 participated in the 50KM and the companion 25KM event on a near perfect day, with overcast skies, cool temperatures and light winds. The top 3 male and female runners in the open and masters’ divisions shared the purse, with each receiving $200, $150 or $100, respectively.
